Auster is nothing if not a clever writer, and 4321 is a wonderfully clever book. The Austerian hallmarks of intertextuality and metafiction are on show throughout

Don’t Auster’s latest and longest novel, 4321, uses a conspicuous and largely original metafictional frame. Essentially it’s a bildungsroman, based on the upbringing of Archie Ferguson, a third generation Jewish American who lives in New Jersey. The acquisition of the surname is the consequence of a joke. (Starred review.) Auster has been turning readers’ heads for three decades, bending the conventions of storytelling.
